Some Movie Thoughts
Here are two documentaries I just watched!
Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda
Ryuichi Sakamoto is a songwriter and Oscar winning composer among many other pursuits. He is known for his solo works as well as his time as a member of the band Yellow Magic Orchestra. This documentary film called Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda was directed by Stephen Nomura Schible with a focus on the famed composer's environmental activism as well as his music. Released in 2017, Coda is an introspective film showing Sakamoto's passion for his craft.
The documentary begins with Sakamoto working on a piano that survived the tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011. After following him through his work as an anti-nuclear activist after the events of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster Coda shows the composer dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Some of my favourite scenes in the documentary are the ones showing Sakamoto recording sounds out in nature. Coda can be found on the Mubi streaming service.
Nail in the Coffin
This documentary begins with Canadian born lucha libre star Vampiro (Ian Hodgkinson) directing the action backstage at the Triplemania XXV event. While the backstage stuff is fun, it's Vampiro's relationship with his daughter that makes the film. In fact there is probably too much backstage footage and it makes the movie possibly inaccessible to non wrestling fans. Throughout his many physical and mental health struggles Vampiro is shown to be dedicated to his daughter's wellbeing while not always taking care of his own. Nail in the Coffin can be found on Super Channel (at least in Canada).
Both documentaries are good but perhaps focus too much on serving existing fans instead of making their subjects accessible to broader audiences.
